One of the most important documents for Indian residents and citizens is their Pan Card, a tool for tracking taxpayers. It is crucial for residents who do not pay taxes to obtain a PAN card because you will need it for many transactions. 

Following Section 139A of the Income Tax Act of 1961, PAN Card Form 49A is an application for the allocation of a Permanent Account Number. This form is intended for use by Indian nationals, Indian-incorporated businesses, and Indian-formed unincorporated entities. It is used when applying for a new PAN Card or updating any previously submitted information.

To obtain a PAN card, Indian citizens and businesses, entities incorporated in India, and unincorporated entities formed in India, must complete PAN card Form 49A. Any IT PAN Service Center (managed by UTIITSL), TIN-Facilitation Centre (MANAGED BY NSDL e-GOV), PAN Center, or other stationery vendor offering such forms may provide Pan Card Form 49A, or you may download it from the UTIITSL/NSDL/Income Tax Department website.

How to Fill Form 49A

To make it simpler for the customer to file the form, Form 49A is neatly divided into various sections. On the top corners of the form, there are spaces designated for the applicant to attach their photographs. There are 16 sections on the form, and each section has a sub-section you must complete.

There are 17 sections and several subsections in PAN Card Form 49A. Therefore, the PAN Card 49A Form must be properly filled out and is provided below.

  • Assessing Officer Code

For the PAN Card application, you must enter AO Code and information such as the Area Code, Range Code, AO Type, and AO Number.

  • Full Name

You must enter your full name. Make sure you don’t use any acronyms when entering your name.

  • Full Name Abbreviations to be Printed on the PAN Card

If you want to include your full name’s acronyms on your PAN card. Be aware that the last name cannot be abbreviated; only the first and middle names can.

  • Other Name

You must check the appropriate box, i.e., yes or no, in the third section of the form, “Have you ever been known by any other name?” You must provide all the information regarding the other name without any abbreviations.

  • Gender

Your gender must be entered (only for individual applicants).

  • Date of Birth

Enter your date of birth, agreement, incorporation, partnership, trust deed, formation of a body of people, or association of people in the following format: DDMMYYYY

  • Details about the parents

You must enter the following information about the parents in this section of the form:

  1. If you have a single mother and want to apply for a PAN Card with just her name, check the appropriate box.
  2. You must include the father’s name unless the mother is a single parent.
  3. Mother’s name, if provided.
  4. If neither option is chosen and you have entered both your mother’s and father’s names, your father’s name will automatically be printed on the PAN card.
  • Address

You must complete this section of Form 49A with all relevant information, including the name of the premises, the state, district, town, and PIN code.

  • Communication Address

If the address for communication is a home or office, you must check the appropriate box.

  • Email ID and Telephone Number

For the PAN authorities to contact you and inform you of any discrepancies in your application form or about your PAN Card application through SMS or email, you must share your phone number and email address. Verify that the phone number has the STD code and the ISD (country code).

  • Status of Applicant

It is necessary to indicate the applicant’s status, i.e., Individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, Businesses, Partnership Firms, Trusts, Groups of Individuals, Local Authorities, Governments, Organizations of Individuals, Artificial Judicial Persons, and Limited Liability Partnerships.

  • Registration Number

Since it does not apply to individuals or HUFs, the registration number field must be filled out by businesses, firms, and LLPs requesting PAN Cards.

  • Aadhaar number

Following the new regulations, you must link a PAN card and an Aadhaar card. According to section 139 AA of this form, you must provide the Enrolment ID from the Aadhaar application form if you do not have an Aadhaar Card.

  • Source of Income

In Form 49A, you must indicate your source of income: salary, income from a business or profession, income from real estate, capital gains, income from other sources, or no income.

If you have chosen Income from Business or Profession as the source of income, mention the Business or Profession Code.

  • Representative Assessee (RA)

Enter the representative assessee’s name and address here if they are a person and are subject to assessment under Section 160 of the Income Tax Act of 1961. You should note that only a representative assessee, such as a manager, guardian of a minor, or agent for a non-resident, may enter information in this field.

  • Documents Required

Any PAN Card Form 49A-required Proof of Address (POA), Proof of Identity (POI), and Proof of Date of Birth documents must be listed here, along with any supporting documentation you’ve attached.

Know this before submitting the form

When completing the Pan Card Form 49A, there are a few rules to remember. You should keep the following in mind as you fill out the form.

  • Language and ground rules

The applicant must complete Form 49A in English only. The only language that you can use to complete the form in English. Another requirement is that the form is filled out in block letters, preferably in black ink. You should enter only one character into each box provided, leaving a space in between each character.

  • Photographs

The applicant must attach two recent color photographs to the form’s top corners. You should not affix the photographs with staples or paper clips because they will appear on the PAN card. It is crucial to provide clarity because the picture will determine how clear the picture is on the PAN card.

  • Added signature to the image

The photo attached to the top left corner of the form should have a signature or left-hand thumb impression. Therefore, the applicant must ensure their signature or thumbprint is visible on both the application and the photo. 

The signature or thumbprint for the photograph on the top right corner of the form should be placed inside the box provided rather than on the image itself, as this photo will be the one that appears on the PAN card.

  • Accurate details

Make sure you have the correct information by taking your time and filling out the form completely. Incorrectly filling out the form could cause problems during processing and even result in the application being turned down.

  • Overwriting

Overwriting must be avoided when sending the form.

  • Contact information

While entering the contact information in the form, there are a few things that one needs to be aware of. First, it’s crucial to include all pertinent information when mentioning an address, including the town, city, and pin code, which you must include. Adding the STD code for the provided phone number is also crucial.
