On July 28, Prabhu Bhamla Chavan Animal Husbandry Minister of Karnataka launched the Punyakoti Dattu Yojana, a cow welfare program that allows citizens to adopt a cow and donate money to the goshalas online. The goal of the Punyakoti Dattu Yojana Karnataka is to encourage the public for providing better amenities for cows in cattle shelters. Moreover, the donations made under the scheme are exempted under section 80G on Income Tax . This scheme will allow private and public organizations to adopt cows from goshalas (cow shelters). In the state of Karnataka, there are approximately 215 government-built cow shelters whose sole purpose is to take care of cows. This program will help not only with cow breeding but also with herd preservation.
Several private animal husbandry organizations and cattle owners abandon their cows for various reasons. To tackle this, the state government devised a solution to adapt the cow scheme solely for the purpose of protecting and nurturing cows. The state government would adopt cows and care for them in goshalas because there is a lot of care required for needy cows, abandoned cows, male calves, elderly, and unhealthy cows in goshalas.
Individuals can adopt cattle under this initiative by paying Rs. 11,000 per animal for a year. However, anyone can choose the duration, which can range from 3 months to 5 years. Any individual can adopt a cow from a cow shelter, feed them, and donate money to cow shelters through the Punyakoti, Dattu portal.
